Did you know: Most mouth rinse products contain more alcohol than wine or beer. Listerine, for example, is nearly 30% alcohol by volume. By contrast, beer is typically around 4% and wine can range between 7 and 14%. In essence, mouthwash is about as alcoholic as a standard bottle of rum, vodka, or bourbon (each of which is about 35% alcohol by volume). In Australia, independent research teams have recommended that certain highly alcoholic mouth rinses be pulled from the shelves of grocery stores and consumer outlets. Followup research has also indicated that the high alcohol content of these products may, in fact, promote oral cancer.
