Japanese Researchers Invent ‘Tooth Patch’ to Prevent Tooth Decay

Researchers in Japan have made international headlines for a new invention that may significantly reduce the incidence of tooth decay. Aptly named the 'tooth patch,' this biocompatible material is designed to fit over the tooth and insulate it from the damaging effects of plaque accumulation. In turn, the tooth is also protected from acidic damage, decay, and thus cavities. In a world where untreated tooth decay is rampant among at least 20% of the American population, an invention like the 'tooth patch' has the potential to profoundly impact the oral health of millions of individuals worldwide. Learn more about this exciting new dental technology on the Miami Dentist Blog.

Wichita, Portland, and Santa Fe Aim to End Water Fluoridation by 2013

Over the past year, the anti-fluoride movement has gained substantial momentum as communities from across the United States have begun to vote against public water fluoridation. Just recently, 3 communities in Indiana have voted to end the fluoridation of their water supplies. Those communities are Walkerton, North Liberty, and Lakeville, home to a combined 5,000 or more individuals who are now safe from fluoride exposure. Other communities in which the anti-fluoride movement is strong include Wichita, Portland, and Santa Fe.

Alcohol in Mouthwash Linked to Oral Cancer

Did you know: Most mouth rinse products contain more alcohol than wine or beer. Listerine, for example, is nearly 30% alcohol by volume. By contrast, beer is typically around 4% and wine can range between 7 and 14%. In essence, mouthwash is about as alcoholic as a standard bottle of rum, vodka, or bourbon (each of which is about 35% alcohol by volume). In Australia, independent research teams have recommended that certain highly alcoholic mouth rinses be pulled from the shelves of grocery stores and consumer outlets. Followup research has also indicated that the high alcohol content of these products may, in fact, promote oral cancer. Visit this special health report to learn more about the risks of mouthwash and oral cancer on the Miami Dentist Blog. Also included in this article is a step-by-step guide to create your own mouthwash at home, free of alcohol and other harmful agents!

Is There Fluoride in Your Wine?

Many U.S. wines contain fluoride levels that are too high to allow them to be exported to Europe and other countries that have lower fluoride limits than the United States. These wines often contain as much as six parts per million of fluoride, as compared to the Environmental Protection Agency’s maximum contaminant level for fluoride of four parts per million.

How Does Fluoride Affect the Pineal Gland?

For much of the 1900s, very little research was conducted to study the effect of fluoride accumulation on brain health. By the 1950s, the subject started to garner attention among a number of scientists, researchers, and dental health professionals. In 1990, a major milestone was reached when Dr. Jennifer Luke asked the question: How does the accumulation of fluoride affect the hard and soft tissues of the body?

Is There Fluoride in Your Produce?

Many Americans are surprised to find out that the fluoride content of their food might be quite high. Fluoride is considered toxic in high doses, making issue of "fluoride in food" very serious. Items like fruit juice, soda, processed cereals, and other foods made with fluoridated public water retain large amounts of that fluoride. Moreover, produce like fruits and vegetables receive even more fluoride exposure when they are routinely watered, exposed to pesticides, and washed before distribution. How serious is this issue? In 1969 and 1977, at least two Russian studies showed evidence that workers who were exposed to fluoride-contaminated compounds experienced negative effects to reproductive systems. The best way to prevent serious fluoride-related health issues is to become knowledgeable of the chemical, where it is, and how it can be avoided. Visit this article on the Miami Dentist Blog to learn more about the fluoride content of food items, like fresh produce.

How Does a Thyroid Condition Affect Oral Health

A thyroid disease may cause an imbalance of the body's most important hormones. As a result, a number of body systems are thrown "out of sync". When this happens, the body becomes weak and susceptible to illness. This has a particularly negative impact on oral health. Individuals with thyroid problems are at greater risk for other diseases like gum disease, heart disease, stroke, dry mouth, cavities, dental caries, and more. Visit this article on the Miami Dentist Blog to learn more about the way in which a thyroid condition may adversely affect oral health.

Improving Thyroid Health with Natural Remedies

The thyroid gland is one of the most important parts of the endocrine system. It controls our heart rate, metabolism, involuntary breathing, and more. Thyroid health is very important for these reasons. A thyroid gland that does not produce a healthy amount of thyroid hormone may seriously impact the body's ability to function properly. Individuals with thyroid conditions may experience difficulty maintaining body temperature, steady body weight, consistent energy levels, and many other difficulties. There are solutions, however. Although most physicians recommend patients with thyroid disorders take prescription medications, there are a growing number of holistic health professionals who believe the opposite. “I think it’s better to retrain your thyroid gland so it makes its own hormone again,” explains pharmacist Suzy Cohen, R.Ph. In this article, readers will learn about the natural remedies that are available to "re-train" the thyroid to produce a healthy amount of hormone.

Fluoride and the Kidneys

The kidneys are believed to be the most important organ in the human body in the fight against long-term fluoride exposure. Healthy adult kidneys are able to excrete about 50 percent of ingested fluoride and are responsible for preventing toxic levels of fluoride from accumulating in the body. However, adults who have kidney disease excrete about 10 to 20 percent of ingested fluoride, which increases their body burden of fluoride and increases their likelihood of fluoride poisoning.

Fluoride and the Reproductive System

Research on the toxicity of fluoride is young compared to other areas of scientific study. The field is growing, however, and new studies appear each year that link fluoride with serious health issues. One such study has been published in the Journal of Reproductive Toxicology in 2002. The conclusion of this study: Fluoride ingestion may cause testicular disorders. Unfortunately, this 2002 study was not the first to produce such alarming results. In 1969 and 1970, two Russian studies came to a similar conclusion. In those studies, Russian workers suffered with reproductive difficulties (including lack of reproductive function) after being exposed to fluoride. Animal studies conducted as early as 1956 have also found a negative impact on gerbils. In sum, numerous studies have produced compelling evidence that fluoride ingestion may cause series harm to the reproductive system. Visit this article to learn more about these studies.

Albuquerque Puts an End to Water Fluoridation

The first half of 2012 saw a major victory in the battle for fluoride-free public drinking water in the United States. In April, city officials in Albuquerque, New Mexico, elected not to increase the fluoride content of the community’s water. “We’re going to err on the side of caution,” remarked David Morris, a representative for the Albuquerque Water Authority (i). The decision triggered a ripple effect that stirred debate in neighboring communities, causing public officials and residents alike to reconsider the widely held notion that fluoride is a “healthy.”

Sugar: The Friendly Enemy

The average American consumes about 150 pounds of sugar each year. Most dentists warn patients that sugar causes cavities. New research shows that sugar is quite toxic, however, and may cause several serious health issues. Such sugar toxicity may cause obesity, heart disease, and may even perpetuate cancer.

Can You Be Allergic to Fluoride?

Though there is much debate whether fluoride is helpful or harmful, studies have shown that people have hypersensitive reactions to fluoride. As recognized by the Physicians’ Desk Reference (1994, 48th Edition, p. 2335-6), these symptoms include gastric distress, headache, joint pain, lethargy, mouth lesions, skin rashes, visual disturbances and weakness. The book also says, “These hypersensitivity reactions usually disappear promptly after discontinuation of the fluoride.” Assure a Smile has prepared this research article to spread awareness for fluoride allergy and to provide patients with alternative methods of preventing tooth decay.

Fluoride's Effect on the Gastrointestinal Tract

Health professionals agree: Overexposure to fluoride may cause serious health issues, including death. Fluoride has been added to public drinking water for nearly a century. Yet there is no clinical evidence suggesting that fluoridated water does, in fact, prevent cavities. Visit the Miami Dentist Blog to learn more about fluoridated water, its impact on the health of the gastrointestinal tract, and ways in which you may prevent exposure to this toxic mineral.

Fluoride’s Effect on the Brain

“Studies in animals and human populations suggest that fluoride exposure, at levels that are experienced by a significant proportion of the population whose drinking water is fluoridated, may have adverse impacts on the developing brain. Though no final conclusions may be reached from available data, the findings are provocative and of significant public health concern.” [Schettler T, et al. (2000)

The Benefits of Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, as it is stored in the liver and fatty tissues. It is stored for long periods and is eliminated slowly from the body. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes from free radical damage and prevents the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
